Church Bookkeeper Job Description
Job Title: Church Bookkeeper
Reports to: Executive Pastor (XP)
Position Summary: The Church Bookkeeper is responsible for managing the church’s financial records with integrity and accuracy. This includes processing contributions, paying bills, reconciling accounts, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and church policies.
Key Responsibilities:
Record weekly tithes, offerings, and designated gifts, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
Manage accounts payable and receivable, including vendor payments and reimbursements.
Maintain accurate records of payroll, taxes, and employee benefits.
Prepare payroll for Bent Creek Preschool in collaboration with Preschool administrator.
Reconcile bank accounts and credit card statements monthly.
Prepare financial statements and reports for the Executive Pastor, finance committee, and congregation.
Assist in preparing the annual budget and track expenses against it.
Ensure compliance with IRS, state, and local financial regulations.
Maintain donor contribution records and issue annual giving statements.
Safeguard financial data, keeping information secure and confidential.
Support audits or financial reviews as needed.
Qualifications:
Evidence of a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and a commitment to live with integrity and godly character.
Experience in bookkeeping or accounting (church/nonprofit experience preferred).
Familiarity with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Aplos, or similar).
Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
Understanding of nonprofit/church financial practices and IRS regulations for charitable organizations.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and integrity in handling church finances.
Strong communication skills for working with staff, volunteers, and committees.
Time Commitment:
Part-time (10–15 hours/week depending on church needs).
This position will be primarily remote however, some office hours necessary.
Flexible schedule with availability for monthly finance meetings.
Employment Classification
This position is a contract employee role. As such:
The bookkeeper will be hired on a contractual basis rather than as a full-time or part-time staff employee.
Compensation will be agreed upon in advance and paid through invoicing or scheduled payments.
No employee benefits (healthcare, retirement, paid leave, etc.) are provided with this role.
The contract may be renewed, revised, or terminated at the discretion of church leadership, with appropriate notice as outlined in the agreement.
The bookkeeper is expected to fulfill responsibilities with professionalism and accountability while maintaining flexibility as an independent contractor.
